Rachel and I are hanging on as God continues to bless us far more than we ask for. Rachel is in her second week of work as an RN at Miami Children’s Hospital in the NICU and she loves it. It’s exactly where she wants to be (other than working with me of course). I am enjoying my 3rd month as youth minister at Sunset CC and so far no major complaints! They seem to like me and I love them. I do miss Hialeah but at least we get to see them from time to time. Working at Sunset has been educational, nurturing and lots of fun. In the three months I’ve been here I have had numerous first time experiences like island camping and paintball wars. I also look forward each day to being in the office after school and hanging out with kids during the week. They just tell stories and laugh as we get to know each other. It’s a fresh start for everyone. Along with this new beginning is a chance to take a new approach to building a relationship with Jesus. We started a new Sunday study that pumped us up. Three kids said it in class and hearing them vocalizes their excitement in growing closer to Christ almost brought tears to my eyes because that’s what it’s all about. It’s a great time in life. I thank you for all your prayers.

A Special Announcement

First of all we would like to wish you happy holidays and an awesome 2006!

Rachel and I have a special announcement to make. We are having a baby! Just kidding, we are not having a child! The plan is to wait a few years for that.

But with all seriousness, I was offered a position as full time youth minister at Sunset Church of Christ and we have accepted. Leaving Hialeah will not be easy but we believe God has given us a special opportunity. Sunset is a wonderful church with great vision and is currently to my knowledge the only Church of Christ in Miami that employs a full-time youth minister (please correct me if I am wrong). They interviewed for almost a year and chose us. They are also open to a youth ministry model that encourages outreach to the needy allowing the work HUM was involved with to continue. This means we can continue serving and not need to burden outside churches and individuals to support us as missionaries. We loved being missionaries but raising funds is an intense job in itself (we encourage you to continue supporting missionaries and let us know if you are looking for a work to support). This does not mean we will stop raising funds for special needs but at least we know our salary is secure. We are also grateful for donations towards school loans and health insurance because were not stupid! I had not made this news public yet because it was made official not long ago.

We thank you once again for over 4 wonderful years of support and encouragement. We will continue writing update letters keeping you posted on God's work in Miami and hope that you will come down and see us.

In case you are wondering, the sign we are holding says happy new year in Japanese.

Update Letter Volume 11

Fall 2005

Wilma, Rita, Katrina; what did we do to them?
The weather became pleasant at just the right time; Hurricane Wilma left 98% of 98 degree Miami-Dade without power after the storm. At first all we could do was help neighbors take down shutters, cut trees and tried to call church members to check up. The congregation met to sing, pray, encourage and talk about the Wilma experience outside on the powerless building steps the following Wednesday. Our friends and neighbors, Ivan and Katrina (a young couple with a 1 year old and a newborn) from church, Rachel and I all raided my parent’s house for a day. They received electricity before anyone else did so we all drove there and ate good homemade hot food. It was good to bring three families together who would usually be too busy to hangout.

What Goes Around Comes Around
After volunteering in LA with the Tammany Oaks church, the directors of that relief operation told me they were grateful and that they would be there for us if we were ever in need. I knew they were sincere but I honestly didn’t think they would need to follow through so soon. As soon as the phone lines opened up, voice messages overflowed asking about our safety and what was needed. Days later Hialeah was unloading supplies (Disaster Relief family food boxes, MRE’s, water, chainsaws, and generators) that would aid and encourage the church and community. The first truck load was gone in about 3 minutes. The second continues to be distributed to the churches in Broward, Dade and Monroe County. We were able to serve the church and community as far as Key West (about 300 mi south of Miami, 90 mi to Cuba) by delivering a trailer full of food boxes. HUM has plans to send a team back to Key West for a weekend to help flooded out members of the church. The most valuable resource sent was Jonathan Hines from the Tammany Oaks church in LA who came down with the first truck and has stayed to help out and offer his advice after having acquired serious experience with Katrina relief work. Once again, all this is obvious proof of a loving higher power manifesting itself through others.
Louisiana Katrina Relief: from Son Quest to the big easy to a not so easy return. It was all more than worth it.

On the last day of the Florida youth rally, Son Quest, we received word that director of Torch Missions, Tim Hines was asked by government officials to assist in directing a hurricane Katrina relief effort based out of the Tammany Oaks Church of Christ in Mandeville, Louisiana. Teams began to plan trips. Churches began to raise funds. A week later Matthew Osman, Allen and I were on the road meeting up with friends from Panama City and Nashville in a church van, three trucks and a camper loaded up with equipment and supplies. We cleared trees, loaded, unloaded, transported and distributed supplies and prayed with people for 10 days. On the way back in Biloxi, MS I got a flat and later found out the spare was bad. So I hitchhiked to the nearest gas station and found a tire repair man working out of a box truck. He fixed my flat, brought me back to the van and then ran across the highway with me to change the tire. He and his wife were proof that God takes care of his servants. I was so tired and it was so late that an hour after getting back on the road I pulled over at a waffle house and slept for a few hours. I would have rested longer in a hotel but Hurricane Rita was on her way to southern Florida and I wanted to make it back to my wife before the storm’s landfall. It was amazing and sad to see a US region in such bad shape, however, I was proud to be apart of the efficient relief work at Tammany even if the feeling of helplessness and wanting to do more never left my mind. Looking back I am reminded of how it only takes willing individuals to make a significant difference in the world.

A Satisfied Group Leader
This summer HUM hosted its biggest group ever and I wasn’t there to see it. None the less, this is what group leader Steven Corbit (Youth Minister at Southern Hills CC in Abilene, TX) had to say about his experience in Miami.
”Our week in Miami was awesome. Things came together beautifully, and I believe God accomplished some neat things through us. We finished the work you laid out for us (the 16 murals, the three exterior houses, the Hialeah nursery, the projects with Little Brothers, EMLC, U of M, and homeless). In addition, we were able to do more work around the Hialeah building (pulling weeds, cleaning, shampooing carpet in auditorium) and do a lot of preparations for the Sunset VBS. It was really cool. I have to brag on Ruth Jackson, the artist who joined last minute with the Highland church group. She was awesome, and took charge of the mural project in a way I could not have pulled off. I hope you'll be pleased when you see the finished products! And while I'm bragging on folks, your partner Luis was so helpful and encouraging. Be sure and give him a big pat on the back for us.”

Recap of HUM calendar: 10 groups came to Miami throughout the spring and summer (and 1 in the fall). Listed below is who and when:
3.5-12 Harding University / Abilene Christian University / Southern Hills church of Christ: Participated in the initiation of the LAMP Project.
3.21-25 Lipscomb University: Miami became one more of the hundreds of destinations LU travels to every year.
5.1-7 University of Florida and Florida State University Campus Ministry: First secular schools to partner with HUM.
5.17-22 University of South Carolina Campus Ministry: Mostly female group gave Miami a taste of true southern hospitality.
6.4-11 Southern Hills Youth Group and Highland: Painting murals for children's hallways at the Hialeah building.
6.20-26 Margaret Street CC: Helping with Hialeah's VBS: turned Hialeah into a farm again.
7.1-7 Brentwood Hills CC: Ending our summer with a bang! First House Painting and Weenie roast for Jesus ever; a huge success. They painted two houses in two days.
10.14-16 West Orange CC: Fall retreat with HUM: Cooked breakfast fed the homeless of Liberty City and painted in the rain under tarps in time for Ignite Youth rally across town (Griffin Rd CC). This trip was more like a mission sprint.

Torch
I had the pleasure of being in Honduras on two occasions for a total of 5 weeks and served with a total of 3 mission trips. The first two weeks were led by Mark Connel whose group of 80 traveled mainly from Alabama, Kentucky and Florida.
This group lead by Mark Connel focused on disaster relief in a community called San Miguel. It’s your typical dirt poor community in a valley with a creek running through it. The soil (or lack there of) is mainly rock with a little dusty dirt. When it rains everything slides. I took pride in having made some calls in the rebuilding of the river banks that crossed in front of the church in San Miguel and through the community. But it was done in vain as the storm rains continued until washing out everything in its path including homes, roads and occasional taxis. Hours of heavy tractor work, gone. Torchers focused on the building which was being used as a refuge. The mountain was sliding into it. Dense mud and rock pilled half way up the wall. Timoteo (well trusted Honduran MacGyver) said the wall would cave in unless we dug it all out and created a drainage system. Although it seemed like meaningless toil, we dug. As we shoveled what was later called “poop mud” because the sewage systems here are less than comparable with ours in the states, I was smacked in the face with the kind of truth that hurts; to us this task was just another story to tell, almost funny at times but to the millions of Hondurans (or 2/3rds of the worlds population) living in poverty, this was their everyday reality. They are exposed, vulnerable and unprotected, doing all they can to maintain and keep their faith in God. Against all odds, the building still stands.

Terry Reaves led the 2nd and 3rd mission trips, serving in all the ways Torch so humbly yet energetically loves to do. One major difference that set this trip apart from any other I’ve been a part of was the way leadership was delegated. Reaves created “the crew,” an experienced team that gave him the freedom to work out logistics of planning projects for the week while the crew was making sure the larger group was diligently serving the people. Terry and the crew stayed for both trips with a few days between. During this time Terry planned for us an unforgettable experience; one cold night in a Torch house we had built in Santa Ana with a limited ration of food and supply. The wood was delivered late; it rained very hard so we did not finish a section of the wall. We were wet, hungry, tired and surprisingly cold. Turns out Santa Ana is at a higher elevation making the temperature dreadfully cold. The idea was to simulate poverty; it worked, I don’t want to be poor. I now have a greater desire to help the poor with proper nutrition and stay dry. I now pray harder for those who are still working on it. To amplify the experience the next day we stayed in one of the best hotels in Tegucigalpa, a place most of us would stay at while visiting a developing country. I have to admit it was nice but I had to ask myself why I was chosen to live the way I do. The answer: I exist to be a useful tool for God. I am the kind of tool God wants.

Our trip to Cuba was canceled due to a hurricane. It would have taken place during these days of poverty simulation so in a strange way I am glad I didn’t get to go.

Mark and Rachel
11 months of marriage and no divorce; looking forward to a mini honeymoon in December. Next year’s goals: health insurance, cutting school loan to 30 g.

Switching formats: saving time, money and trees.
After 10 volumes of the HUM Update Letter we have decided to try a new approach to writing mission reports. Change is not new to the low budget publication starting off as a word document, printed, stapled and sent out in a stamped envelope. I used to hand label all of them then realized how stupid I was! We switched to a more practical legal sized paper, purchased Adobe Illustrator and established a labeling system. I have to admit I am proud of the aesthetics of the last few letters but we are still dealing with inconsistent copy machines, paper jams and stamps. In a time in which natural resources are depleting and money is tight, it’s time for a drastic change to what is know as the “blog.” It’s web media, a mini web site. The HUM Letter will now come in color! It will be more current with more images. You will have the freedom to post comments and send it to others. It’s just better. If you do not have access to the internet we will be happy to send you a printed version. Just let us know. We are confident you will appreciate the change. The site is: http://www.hum333.blogspot.com/ . We are looking forward to reading your comments.

Wilma

Wilma was nothing like Katrina in NOLA but it did take our electricity and cause damage for many. It's amazing how a storm changes things in a city. For some it meant a few hungry nights. Thanks to God and the Mandeville CC in LA (and people like Janet Hines, Gayle Davidson working the logistics and Paul Crites, Brett White and Jonathan Hines who drove down to Miami from LA to deliver) life after a battering storm is made better. The following are pictures of the all the help that was sent and volunteers who are helping to get to those who need it.

A Photograph From LA.

So many photographs have been taken but few of them truly describe what it's like out there. I think this is one of the few that do Katrina-aftermath justice. I little girl, her mom and younger brother rummage through piles of donated clothing as a volunteer relief worker does as best as he can to help. How do you help a family who lost everything? The best I could do to serve them was to take this picture and tell them I would show it to others. I said I would ask you to pray for them. They received food, water and basic medical attention in addition to the clothing. The work Tammany Oaks Church of Christ is doing is awesome. Spending 5 weeks away from Rachel while working in Honduras was tough. We were just getting used to living with each other when the time came to go. It's located in the middle of nowhere close to the pen. No one goes their but this year Terry Reaves' Torch group built a super playground and we took 30 of them out on the town one day. These kids are what make these trips extra special. Freddy on the left is realy funny. We were watching Finding Nemo in Espanol and he was lounging on Andy Polk. Then he looks over at me and sees me eating something so he crawls over to me thinking he wanted to cuddle but then reaches over a grabs my food, smiles and crawls back to Andy's lap. Beautiful. This particular letter does not contain a pic of what it looks like but I designed it and I have to say I'm kinda proud of it. It's white with a fresh new 2005 HUM design on front and small logo on the back.

50% of the proceeds will go to these kids so they can serve as translators on the mission field and the rest helps HUM pay the bills and continue serving in Miami.

If you would like to know more about HUM, the T-shirt or more importantly the three soon to be missionaries write me at this address: markonius3@yahoo.com or call to 954.562.6111.
Checks may be written out to: Hialeah church of Christ / Mark Herrera and sent to: Hialeah chruch of Christ / 7700 W 20th Ave / Hialeah, FL 33016
Thank you, God bless,

Mark Herrera PS: Thanks for all those (Fred) who have helped proof this blog. It's no secret that I'm not a gramatical genius.

HUM Update Letter #9

Mark and Rachel: United in Matrimony
I can easily say the day I married Rachel was one of the greatest days of my life. The ceremony was as if I was being honored by God himself. Many family and friends were able to share it with us despite the odd day, a Tuesday night after Christmas. Luis Estrada, one of my best friends and mentor, performed the ceremony. His talented wife Rachel took incredible photos and her father-in-law, John Wallace, captured the night on digital camcorder. My parents Magaly and Marco Herrera, Rachel's parents Steven and Vicki Younger, and our family in Christ, members of the Iglesia de Cristo en Hialeah, prepared the building for the memorable occasion. Family and friends met up the night before to celebrate and we truly lived it up. Rachel and I met in college and later became friends. After college we were active in the church as well as service projects in the community and mission trips overseas. After a few years of getting to know each other we decided to get married. trips over seas. After a few years of getting to know eachother we decided to get married. We were blessed to have developed a relationship around God and didn't rush. After awhile God made it clear. We were both confident and joyful at our wedding and hope the same for you. We plan on continuing our service to the Lord together, through the church and HUM, and wherever he may lead us. Thank you all for attending the wedding, gifts and most of all, your prayers.

HUM Spring Break and Summer 2005
UF, USC, LU, HU, ACU, Southern Hills CC, UD, Milton CC and Mayfair CC plan on working with HUM this year. Most groups ever! We are looking forward to making a big impact for Christ on the city of Hialeah and Miami Dade County. It will also be a ground breaking time for the Continents of Great Cities mission team to Miami and the LAMP project (Latin American Missions Program). During HU, ACU and Southern Hills CC's visits, a of covenant will be signed stating an official partnership between HU, ACU, Sunset CC and the Miami for Christ team. The goal is to plant 24 churches in 25 years with 12 teams. This plan will change the face of Miami as we know it.

Plans to work with the City Clerk of Hialeah
Founded in 1925, the City of Hialeah is home to over 240,000 residents covering a geographic area of 24 square miles. Located in the north west corner of Miami-Dade County.

In December of 04 Rex Morgan and I met with the City Clerk of Hialeah, Dan De Loach (a member of the Griffin Road church of Christ) to discus how HUM and the city could work together in serving the community and witnessing for Christ. A way we decided this could be done was by helping families to avoid city fines for property violations like an unkept yard or graffiti on walls. The way it might work is as follows- the city updates a weekly list of homes with fines. The family has a week to fix the problem. The city investigates the residents of these homes and forms a new list of families who fall under the needy category (elderly, single parents). The city would give these families the option to accept our free services. HUM volunteer groups would come and serve with joy and eagerness. We establish a relationship with families and invite them to learn more about Jesus and his free gift of love.

Trivia:What famous female aviator took off from North Hialeah in June of 1937 to attempt an around the world flight but was lost at sea and never heard from again?
Amelia Earhart.

Youth profile: Ivan
"What I went through I could have used as an excess to do bad but i didn't. Two things always stuck in my heart; always trying and always forgiving."

I asked Ivan, "If you could tell the world anything about yourself what would it be?" This is what he wanted you to know. Ivan was born in 1984 -Milwaukee. His father was less-than-loving, sending him to the hospital on many occasions with a broken skull and burned retinas. He was taken away by the state and entered into foster care. Then somehow he was lost in that system. His adoptive single mother, Bertha, fostered him since he was 5 but has not received any money for doing so. Beside the monetary challenges he and his family has endured, Ivan suffered trauma from his father's abuse, mental challenges making high school an enormous achievement and finding a job an even tougher test. None-the-less, he received his diploma and is currently working at Quiz no's Subs where he has developed good relationships with two bosses and many employees. His last boss sold the restaurant but found hope in Ivan. Ivan described his former boss as someone who didn't care much for Christians; his ex-wife being one of them. But in Ivan he witnessed a good example. Ivan said at one occasion he thought things weren't going to work out because of his boss' prejudice towards Christians but, after many tests of character, Ivan became his most trusted employee. The same could be said for his current boss. Ivan's hope is to become a writer but his dream is to become professional wrestler. Please keep Ivan in your prayers. If you wish to encourage Ivan, write to him at markonius3@yahoo.com Subject: Youth Profile: Ivan.

Hialeah's Contribution to Tsunami Relief
On January 23 the Spanish speaking members at Hialeah CC (also known as la Iglesia de Cristo en Hialeah) raised $800+ for Tsunami disaster relief. Not known for wealth but known for giving of itself, Hialeah is a congregation in transition from being a missionary church to a self sustaining church. It does not pay full-time salaries to its three full-time ministers or for use of its building. The church relies on the English-speaking members for most of the bills and the ministers raise money as missionaries to work there. Most of the Spanish are from immigrant backgrounds with little formal education. Although most of them came seeking a higher quality of life, the average household income of our families is between $16-22,000 per year. In a city where the average house cost $200,000 and rent is about $900 a month, life for our members is hard-earned. But on this day they gave from their heart.s. Although for some this figure is something easily matched with a quick sign of a check, for these members it was an inspiring sacrifice.

HUM Teams to Miami
Spring Break and Summer 2005 (Tentative)
3.5-12 Harding University / Abilene Christian University /Southern Hills church of Christ
3.21-25 Lipscomb University
3.29-4.1 University of Delaware Campus Ministry
5.1-7 University of Florida Campus Ministry
5.17-22 University of South Carolina Campus Ministry
6.20-26 Milton church of Christ; Pensacola, FL
6.26-30 Southern Hills church of Christ; Abilene, TX
7.18-23 Mayfair church of Christ; Huntsville, AL

Missions Trips
6.4-15 *TORCH: Lead by Mark Connell
7.1-9 TORCH: Lead by Terry Reeves
7.10-13 **Havana, Cuba: Caribbean Lectureships
7.14-21 TORCH: Lead by Terry Reeves

*TORCH: Training Of Redeemed Christians Heaven bound.
